Good Housekeeping wants you to know there’s no need to throw your broken things away – instead pay them a visit at their fun upper Cuba Street store and pick up all the bits and pieces you need for a repair job instead. An eco/DIY shop, the idea came about when owners of sustainable hair salon The Powder Room saw the lease come up for the building across the road, and (keen fixers and eco-friendly people themselves) within a couple of months had made the small space into an epic spot for those wanting to add some repair fun into their lives.
The Fixers Manifesto tacked to the front counter is somewhat the ethos of the whole shop, where visitors are encouraged to improve, make, learn and share fixing skills and in general choose a different route when it comes to fast consumerism. Pick up some thread, scissors, buttons or miscellaneous sewing items and fix those holey jeans you’ve been meaning to do, say goodbye to cling wrap and take home some Lilybee wax wraps instead, or add to your eco-friendly pantry with metal straws, bamboo toothbrushes and re-useable goodie bags.
Proud advocates of the refill attitude of shoppers, Good Housekeeping has a massive range of EcoStore laundry liquids, wool wash, hand wash and hair care by Neuma, all available to take home in your own fill up container. If you’ve forgotten your bottle, never fear, Good Housekeeping is the kind of generous place that runs an honesty system of jars and containers that you can use for free. Making sure your refill choice is an economical one as well as sustainable, means their prices are a better choice than buying new.
Originally a dress-makers many years ago, it seems to make sense that this space has come full circle and is once again encouraging people to remake and reuse.
