Peppered with tight rows of the most beautiful glass and pounamu pieces, Real Aotearoa is a gallery that is intentionally small. It’s often said the vibe here is like an intimate kitchen party - with all the lively warmth and bonhomie but none of the awkward small talk or drunken regrets.

There’s an easy warmth to the way it all comes together, with more than 20 handblown glass lights glowing overhead, each one made by a local artist, each one part of the story. Custom details, from the whakatauki motifs to the bilingual “pieces from the heart of New Zealand” tagline across the window, ground the space firmly in Aotearoa. Even the ever-present water bowl outside speaks to the welcoming, community-minded spirit, where four-legged visitors are also included.

Inside, around 80 New Zealand artists are represented across jewellery, glass, pounamu, and more, with a thoughtfully curated range that spans accessible keepsakes through to significant, heirloom pieces. There’s a clear sense of care in what’s chosen to sit on these shelves: handprinted wooden birds, luminous glass platters, ceramic hydrangeas, sculptural bronze sea life, and striking pounamu forms, from toki to flowing Möbius ribbons. Taonga pūoro and even a hand-forged knife with a greenstone handle add to the richness.

What makes Real Aotearoa truly special is the depth of relationship behind it all. Many of the artists have been part of the journey for years, and that direct connection means customers aren’t just buying an object; they’re stepping into a story. The ability to arrange bespoke pieces, to understand what’s possible, and to go the extra mile (often literally, with appointments outside standard hours) gives the experience a generosity that’s hard to replicate.

It’s thoughtful and unmistakably local, driven by a simple but powerful idea: art should feel approachable, personal, and something to be lived with.
