A neighbourhood bistro in the heart of Auckland's Westmere, Ragtag is casual, delicious and oozing with atmosphere. As the only restaurant in the neighbourhood, there’s a teeny tiny obligation that it brings the ambiance to Westmere. And, it delivers. A cosy space, with outdoor heaters and intimate seating, Ragtag exudes the exact charm that locals are looking for.

After experimenting with numerous pop ups across Auckland (and London!), Kiwi chef Dan Freeman opened his first brick-and-mortar store in Westmere. Having always considered tacos as the ideal way to consume a meal - combining bread with meats and salsas, sharing fillings and using your hands - Freeman has elevated his tortillas from being simply a vessel for the goods to the actual main event.

On first glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking the menu was Mexican inspired. Despite the strong presence of tortillas, Ragtag’s flavour profile carries heavy influence from Taiwan, American BBQ and British pub culture. There’s zero pretence that the tacos are authentic (rather Ragtag is very clear about being 100% not authentic), so you can expect some pretty unique fillings and fun takes on classics that don’t feature a single Mexican ingredient.

Every day, the team at Ragtag hand makes over 400 flour tortillas. Their not-so-secret ingredient is duck fat, which makes the tortillas rich, light and fluffy, offering a real point of difference. Pair the tortillas with melt in your mouth T-bone steak (served with soy egg and hot sauce), or the smoked lamb and market fish options. For a meatless option, the cauliflower tempura, harissa and grape salsa will inevitably please. Of course, another fan-favourite is the duck taco dish, which includes confit duck, beetroot salsa and burnt onion.

Lastly, the drinks menu features a select range of house-made cocktails, interesting wines and a number of quality craft beers, including Brave Brewing’s much-loved Tiger Milk IPA on tap. Whether you’re after a casual afternoon vino or something special with dinner, Ragtag will have you well covered.
