4 Papanui Road, Merivale, Christchurch

Walking or driving down an ever-busy Papanui Road in Christchurch, you might be surprised that a sophisticated slice of Europe can be found only metres away at Vesuvio. Exuding laidback Mediterranean vibes, escaping reality and enjoying everything on offer at Vesuvio is easy. Not to mention it suits all occasions; from a quick after-work drink with colleagues to long lingering catch-ups with friends or a romantic date night.

Vesuvio has lived many lives since it first opened its doors back in the early 1990s. The first edition was on Oxford Terrace and was the first bar to be set up here. As many businesses experienced upheaval post-earthquakes, the bar reopened in 2014 in its Papanui Road location. Following a hiatus due to the pandemic, Vesuvio reopened in all its glory again in 2023 and just keeps getting better and better.

The central courtyard acts as a piazza of sorts and is original from the 1930s, covered and heated it makes for an all seasons destination. Sundrenched during the day giving way to an intimate candlelit setting in the evening. While you may opt to stay in the courtyard, Vesuvio has a range of spaces for you to enjoy and all have their own personality and vibe. Whether it’s the elegant and sophisticated wine bar, refined lounge area, cosy upstairs library or the sleek and modern tap room space, they all create an unforgettable experience. Best of all, you can enjoy the live music that’s on offer every week from each of these spaces.

On the food and drinks front, Vesuvio has mastered its offering, with an extensive drinks selection that includes 50+ glasspour wines, classic cocktails and 12 rotating Garage Project beers on tap at the Tap Room. To accompany your tipple of choice, there’s a selection of tapas that will make your mouth water just by reading the menu. If you and your group are struggling to decide on your order, opt for the Chef’s Choice and enjoy as delicious dish after dish is delivered to your table.

Vesuvio is the very best of Christchurch’s food and beverage scene, encompassing nostalgia and history, whilst always pushing the envelope to innovate and we hear exciting developments are on the cards in the near future. A visit to Vesuvio is time well spent.
