Peanut butter has been, and will continue to be, the unsung hero of breakfasts and lunches everywhere. It’s salty, a tad bit sweet, often crunchy and packed with healthy fats, protein and nutty goodness. The Hastie brothers at Bay Rd do it best and their factory on Roberts Street is a must-visit for anyone who even sort of enjoys the peanutty spread.
The Dunedin-born-and-bred builders hung up their tool belts in 2017 to create a top-notch, local peanut butter that is healthy, sustainable and tastes great. They started at Otago Farmers Market on Saturday mornings with their push bike towing a trailer full of jars and have now moved into peanut butter full-time at their Roberts Street factory. You can also find their jars stocked in stores around the country, including a number of local Dunedin spots.
The team roasts small batches of peanuts in converted coffee roasters before adding a dash of Himalayan pink salt and grinding it all up to make the freshest peanut butter possible. It’s the kind of peanut butter you’ll want to eat straight off the spoon. Bay Rd offers classic smooth, crunchy, chilli, almond and hazelnut butters. If you’re a regular, you can return your jar for a discount on the next one.
If you can’t make it to down to the factory, look out for their peanut butter on menus across Dunedin and at other Neat Places like Buster Greens on George Street and Catalyst on Princes Street.
