As soon as the clock strikes 7am in Gisborne, Curbside Kitchen’s coffee machine kicks into gear with a throng of regulars stopping by for their daily brew before work or school drop-offs. The lucky ones get to linger a little longer, likely giving in to the stack of sugar-coated custard donuts or brioche on the counter.

Curbside Kitchen has been a key player in Gisborne’s food scene ever since switching from a food truck parked up at Tolaga Bay Wharf to a buzzing cafe on Ballance Street. Those who’ve been around the neighbourhood for a while may remember it as the location of The Daily Donut – and we’re happy to report these decadent treats can still be found on site every day.

The cabinet at Curbside is always reliable with wholesome hearty classics including sausage rolls, toasties, sandwiches, good hunks of old-school slices, fresh salads, and more. We appreciate the nostalgic jar of lolly bags sitting on the counter too. There’s also a simple all-day breakfast menu that heroes seasonal produce either accompanying a bowl of granola, topped on thick slice of sourdough or layered into a bun. Those with vegan, vegetarians and gluten-free needs are all taken care of.

In the corner of the cafe, a small retail area displays a delightful curation of homewares and pantry items – all selected to encourage eco-living. There’s a bright palette of Frank Green drink bottles, vibrant ZAY hand-woven shopper bags, locally made pickles and preserves, candles, and a window shelf lined with handmade ceramic keep cups and teapots.

Surrounded by retro yellow wallpaper and baby pink walls and an outdoor area drenched in morning sun, Curbside is a joyful and laid-back spot for great coffee, baked goods, breakfast and lunch. Save us a donut, won’t you?
