Penang Street Food brings to Hamilton’s Victoria Street the sights, smells, and flavours of a Malaysian street market, all captured in a relaxed, modern setting. The air carries the scent of wok-tossed noodles, aromatic curries, and smoky satay, while the décor, including vivid photographs of dishes, cultural art, and Malaysian landmarks, offers a genuine connection to its roots.
At the heart of the restaurant is owner Kim Wern Tiow, known to many as Owen. He first visited New Zealand back in 2007 and was immediately struck by how warmly the community embraced Malaysian cuisine. That trip planted the seed for his own restaurant, an ambition tested by the pandemic’s delays and the depletion of his savings. When the doors finally opened in 2022, Owen welcomed a chef from Penang itself, making the moment all the more meaningful. His goal was (and remains) to offer Hamilton something distinctive, rooted in tradition and quality.
Step inside and you’re greeted by a space that marries Malaysia’s vibrant street culture with the comfort of a sit-down meal. Walls bloom with images of iconic dishes, cultural art, and beloved landmarks, transporting diners to the streets of Kuala Lumpur or George Town. Seating options suit every mood: a lively main dining area for casual meals, and a private VIP room for up to 12 guests when you need a little extra intimacy.
The menu feels like a tribute to Malaysia’s culinary heritage, anchored by classics: flaky roti canai with curry; fragrant nasi lemak with sambal, egg, peanuts, and cucumber; char kway teow steamed with the signature “breath of the wok”; coconut-rich laksa; and smoky satay skewers served with peanut sauce. Each dish carries recipes passed down through generations, prepared to balance authenticity with consistency.
Owen’s vision for Penang Street Food goes beyond every plate: it’s about creating a sanctuary where friends and families can gather, share laughter, and rediscover the simple joy of good food. Hamilton hasn’t just gained a restaurant; it’s found a warm, flavour-filled corner of Malaysia to call its own.
