If happiness was a shop, it would look like this one. Founded by Philina Den Dulk, Art on Thames is a celebration of beautiful things designed and made in Aotearoa.

After nine years on Tyne Street (where it was known as Art on Tyne), Philina had outgrown the space and was ready for a change. Fortunately, the move was just around the corner to a charming historic building with grand pillars, tall arched windows and wooden floorboards. The best part? Now there’s additional space to shine a light on even more New Zealand-made treasures.

Ōamaru certainly isn’t lacking in beautiful art and lifestyle stores, yet each one brings its own distinctive flair. Art on Thames stands out with a kaleidoscope of fun, colourful and surprising pieces at every turn, with locals often popping in for their daily boost of joy. As an artist herself, Philina has strong ties to the art community and focuses on showcasing unique works from lesser known (but mighty talented) artists living down the road and all over New Zealand. With accessible pricing, Art on Thames also makes owning original art an achievable dream for many.

Between the paintings and prints, ceramics and china plates, bright objects, luxurious skincare and artisan chocolates, it’s all too easy to lose track of time here. If you don’t have a bus to catch, we recommend staying as long as possible to explore every pocket. Don’t forget to step into the back room to meet local artist Matthew Wicks (aka Wicksey), who shares the building with Art on Thames.
