Brewing strong since ‘97, Frederick Street’s Strictly Coffee Roasters is a landmark of the North Dunedin bean scene. With a triple-shot pick-me-up from new ownership in 2020, this iconic spot enjoys a rare pedigree: part working roastery, part neighbourhood café, pouring specialty coffee without an ounce of snobbery.

The squat, black streetside premise is hard to miss. Step through the entrance and craft is on full display. Polished concrete floors and wooden slats are grounded by cosy nooks, soft seating, and bespoke furnishings courtesy of local makers. Copper panelling nods to the building’s history, while a steel Loring Kestrel roaster is an emblem of the present. Chosen as much for sustainability as precision, this piece of coffee tech hums away in full view, so you can track the journey from green bean to cup.

A long, open coffee bar anchors the space, serving house blends alongside a rotating cast of single origins that run from Ethiopian classics to experimental co-fermentations. Seasonal signature drinks push the boat out further, or you can master the perfect shot yourself by booking into an espresso class.

From the kitchen, things are kept strictly simple and local with levelled-up toasties. Take quality produce from just down the road, press it between thick slices of award-winning Dunedin bread (or gluten-free bakes from Paneora) and voilà.
