Who knew Paraparaumu’s coffee scene was this good. You’ll find one of the picks of the bunch at The Roastery, set in a converted warehouse on Sheffield Street. The site wears its industrial bones with style, as state-of-the-art computerised roasting equipment fills the space with the rich aroma of freshly roasted beans and the soft rhythm of artisan roasting in motion.

The fitout at The Roastery doesn’t shy away from its industrial roots, with the roller door, exposed rafters, and bare concrete floor offering a gritty backdrop to the softer pastel hues of the furniture. It’s sophisticated and relaxed inside, without trying too hard, and the sleek matte-black roasters are an eye-catching centrepiece. A couple of retro pinball machines are nestled in one corner, adding further pops of colour.

Having started life in 2016 as a shared roasting space, The Roastery has grown into a full-blown espresso bar and local hub. Punters can sign up for The Roastery’s hands-on experience, a thoughtfully curated 90-minute journey through bean selection, roast profiling, and hands-on roasting, processing, and bagging, with the beans you roasted yourself to take home as a souvenir.

Sustainability is also baked into the operations here; keep an eye out for those iconic reusable glass jars, which customers can refill again and again. It all adds up to a circular packaging system that’s saved hundreds of bags from landfill.

Far from just a coffee stop fashioned out of a warehouse, The Roastery is a place where flavour, story, craft, and community combine in a warm, industrial-cool embrace.
