There’s a sense of discovery when walking down the alleyway off the main street in Geraldine to a former garage workshop, which has been refurbished to house the town’s only gin distillery: Humdinger Gin. The small-batch botanical gin distillery was established in 2020 by long-term gin lovers, and self-taught distillers, Andrew and Saskia Lewis.

Everything at Humdinger is done by hand, from peeling citrus skins to measuring alcohol levels to bottling and marketing. All botanicals used in the gins are natural and come from a specialist spice trader. Andrew and Saskia love to experiment, research and perfect their recipes, with a motto of doing a little but doing it well.

At the distillery, you’ll be able to taste a variety of gins that are available for purchase, along with selected New Zealand tonics. Watch the magic happen behind a large window at the petite gin-making factory, while you sip the fruit of the tinkerer’s labour and smell the botanicals used in the process.

With a few awards already under its belt in the first year of gin production, it’s safe to say that Humdinger Gin lives up to its name. If you’re unable to visit the distillery in Geraldine, you can get your hands on its products at selected liquor stores, bars and restaurants across the motu.
