11 Egmont St, Te Aro, Wellington

Völco’s latest outpost is a warm, welcoming addition to Wellington that takes over the former site of the much-loved Egmont Street Deli & Diner. A chic, relaxed space where you can drop in at any time of day, it’s an ideally located spot for a delicious, top-tier pastry and coffee that won’t break the bank.

Blending a piece of Wellington hospo history with the ‘new wave’ of bakeries, the iconic space, once upon a time a carpark, has been thoughtfully reimagined to reflect Völco’s signature style. Concrete-rendered walls and handmade yellow tiles sit alongside warm timber and brushed brass accents, design details inspired by the heat and craft behind the bakery’s name. There are tables aplenty, so bring the crew and curl up with a pastry and some good yarns.

The menu is a rotating celebration of seasonal ingredients and inventive ideas. Standouts include the cinnamon scroll, a super-soft, doughy treat swirled with cinnamon butter and topped with generous glaze, and the bacon jam danish, which combines a sweet smokiness and cheesy goodness within flaky croissant pastry. Each Völco spot offers its own point of difference, and at Egmont Street it’s dipping its toes into the brunch scene, a nod to the legacy of the former occupants of this space.

The Völco empire is taking over Wellington, and that can only be good news for lovers of all things baked, whether of the sweet or savoury kind. Head along to this charismatic laneway spot and see what the fuss is all about.
